The images are representations of elementary cellular automata. These automata are one-dimensional; the horizontal axis is their space, and the vertical axis is time, with earlier times higher in the image. Each image is periodically updated using a random initial state. Some of the automata (e.g. rule 110 have behavior complex enough to be Turing-complete.
